Criterion text
In order to receive [points/reduction] during tender evaluation, drying cabinets must have an energy consumption of no more than 0.4 kWh/kg of laundry.
Verification
Data sheets, product specifications or other documentation showing the drying cabinet's energy consumption.
Proposed follow-up
Ensure that drying cabinets supplied under the contract correspond to the energy-efficient models for which the supplier has been granted added value during tender evaluation by checking the energy consumption in accordance with the requirement shown above.
Information about the criterion
Energy consumption is often shown in kWh/X kg of laundry, where X represents the amount of clothes the cabinet is capable of drying at one time. Energy consumption is sometimes given in kWh/year. This number is often calculated according 200 uses, but ask the supplier in such cases to show how they convert to kWh/kg of laundry.
An energy-efficient drying cabinet that uses, for example, heat pump technology is more expensive to purchase but the more efficient energy consumption results in lower operating costs. A calculation should be made to ascertain the combined purchase and operating cost.
Example calculation
Assume that the drying cabinet will be used 200 times per year and that the price of electricity is 1 SEK/kWh.
The cost over 10 years = initial purchase price + annual consumption × price of electricity × 10 (years).
Drying cabinet 1:
Purchase price: 15,000 SEK.
Energy used to dry 4 kg of laundry: 1.3 kWh/load, which equates to 520 kWh/year.
Total cost, including purchase and 10 years of operation: 15,000 + 520 × 1 × 10 = 20,200 SEK.
Drying cabinet 2:
Purchase price: 6,000 SEK.
Energy used to dry 4 kg of laundry: 6 kWh/load, which equates to 2,400 kWh/year.
Total cost: 6,000 × 2,400 × 1 × 10 = 30,000 SEK.
Environmental goals
Motive
Energy use in the use phase is part of the environmental impact of the appliance. Buying energy-efficient drying cabinets thus reduces the environmental impact of the user phase. Various drying cabinets vary widely in energy consumption. Different technologies are different energy efficient.
There is no energy labeling or ecodesign requirement for dryers. In Sweden, drying cabinets are used, for example, in preschools and leisure time to dry children's clothes. The difference between drying cabinets and dryers when used is that drying cabinets are also used to dry sandy and muddy clothes as well as shoes, while dryers are only intended to dry clean laundry.
